Ran, I'm going to have to explain how that's very much like an existing game -- Now, the Holy Grail War...?

The Priest nodded.

"Yes. Seven Masters, Seven Servants. Each Servant has a different Class, yours is Caster. You can consider me the 'Watcher'. I make sure the rules are enforced during this event, and I also house the Masters that no longer wish to fight."

But why do we have to fight? Can't we just take the Holy Grail?

"No, the Holy Grail has not fully formed. That is part of why these Servants are needed, they can take the Holy Grail, and thus, receive their wish, as well as have the Master's wish granted. It is in the Basement of this Church, but it will do no good."

Why not?

"At a specific time for each era, the Holy Grail starts to form, seven Magicians are chosen to take part in the Holy Grail War. One Master, one Servant. That is the necessary requirement for it to form."

Okay.... But how are those two things connected?

"The Holy Grail grants a vessel to the Heroic Spirits, using the power of it's chosen Magician, it returns a famous, or infamous being from the dead. For it to reach full power, you must eliminate the other Servants."

Sounds reasonable.... What about the Masters?

"You do not need to harm them, if you are so inclined. But they can take another Servant, should one escape after you kill their Master."

Dan listens, although he knows about the story, he would like to hear it again

Say that we do kill their Master... What happens?

"The Servant begins to fade, but they will have enough time in the world that they may find another Master."

Okay.... Is there anything else we should know?

"Since you are a new Magician; yes. Magic is an art that should not be discovered by the general public. Aside from the dangers from the Government, there is also the Heretic Hunters..."

And if someone sees us in the middle of a fight?

"A temporary truce is to be formed, and you kill the witness."

... There's no other way?

"No."

What if someone close to us should see the fight, we do not have to kill them, correct?

"In most cases, it is easier to kill them, but if they are a trusted friend you can convince to remain silent about the matter, then yes. You are correct."

"Just a single offer, if you do not wish to fight, now would be the time to take residence here."

I'd rather not see something like that fall into the wrong hands, I'm going to take part in the War.

"Then you are free to go, now that you are filled in with everything."

Ran accepts his help and stands up.

"Be well, Alex."

...There is an outside worlder here? In Gensokyo?

At least we found out where the Holy Grail is. Six other Masters and Servants to fight... I guess not everything can be simple.

Really? It's not entirely unexpected that an Outside Worlder would end up here, but.... It can prove to be quite interesting.

Where do we start looking?

Well, if he strays over here he will have to deal with the strongest!

(You know, I like how ZUN's characters have a lot of culture and literature refrences behind them. It's pretty interesting.)

They're probably Magicians like myself... The city is the battleground, but it won't take place at day, too many witnesses. Going hunting won't really get us anywhere, so let's just take it slow for now.

Indeed, the Outside Worlder most likely does not know his place in Gensokyo.

(Also the fact that dispite the game being japanese, some characters have western names, like "Alice Margatroid" While Alice is a common name worldwide the entire name seems to be more westernized.)

Yeah, there's a number of things we can do to pass the time.

(Indeed. Then there are names like "Marisa Kirisame", "Remilia Scarlet", I certainly have to credit the creative naming process.)

(Like a Witch that fires a mega laser, or a Vampire that has a weapon from norse mythology, or a Half ghost half human that has impressive sword skills. I would never be able to come up with something like that.)

Oh, that's a Theater. People purchase tickets and watch movies there, it's quite the enjoyable experience.... Usually.

So the trees are growing back now... That's a rather swift recovery.

(I think my most creative characters would be Alex, and then the Old One. Veledren's pretty much the standard Knight if not for the Heaven's Edge, as much as I like to play him. xD)

Doesn't it take hundreds of years for this to happen?
