PostSubject: Hamachi Network For Fantasy Dreamers Forum   Sat Apr 24, 2010 3:16 am

It was mentioned in a previous post that I have set up a Hamachi network for the forum group. For those of you who don't know what Hamachi is, it's a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client which allows people to connect to others as if they were on the same physical network (but it's a virtual network).

Connecting to our Hamachi network will make it easier to connect when playing multiplayer games such as Hisotensoku or any game which requires a network connection. The client also provides a live chat room exclusive to members of the network.

To connect to our network, start by downloading the Hamachi client here.

Select "Unmanaged"; you do not need to register for an account.

After installation is finished, the client appears as a small window with "LogMeIn Hamachi2" as the title and with three tabs underneath, "System", "Network", and "Help". Click the Network tab and select "Join an existing network". It will ask for the Network ID and a Password. Enter the following:

Network ID: fantasydreamers
Password: reimufantasyheaven

After connecting, Hamachi will assign a unique IP number to your computer exclusive to the Hamachi client. Your computer name also appears underneath this number, and it is how others identify you. If you would like to change the name that appears in the network list, click the "System" tab, then "Preferences", then "Status", and there is a link to change your name there.

There are a couple important things to note.

First, Hamachi uses the PnP protocol to connect to others; it's a "Peer to peer" connection. In most cases, this isn't a problem. However, in certain cases, this can be blocked by a router or a network administrator. For example, college dorms may have these types of connections blocked for various reasons such as ensuring that network traffic doesn't overload the system; people in these conditions would not be able to connect through Hamachi.

Second, Hamachi creates a virtual network interface which connects to others as if they were on the same physical network. Things that are shared to your personal network may also become shared through the Hamachi interface. While this can be very handy for some things, be aware that others on the network may have the ability to browse shared folders. If you do not want to share folders on the Hamachi network, an easy way is to disable file sharing on your computer. Systems that run Vista or higher also allow the option of considering the Hamachi network a "Public" network, which disables file sharing with that network by default.

There is also a limit of 16 concurrent users at a time for this version.

This network is being provided for our convenience. You don't have to join, but keep in mind that this is made available to members of the forum. The aim is to make it easier in the future to connect for multiplayer games and to stay better connected in general.

Arrow Since I haven't seen any replies in this thread, but I have seen at least one connection to our network, I'd just like to ask those who are connected or are planning to connect to post something here so that I know what's going on.

Don't know if i'll ever use it. I usually try to keep my online play of any sort of game limited since I get too much into it. At one point Ragnarok Online kinda controlled my life. At this point, i think i can play RO on a somewhat normal play schedule now though lol.

Thanks to all who have joined our Hamachi network thus far. Even if we don't use it most of the time, it's proven to be handy for network games/matches or as an alternative to traditional connection methods. As of this posting, our network has grown to seven accepted members.

Exclamation I would like to take this moment to remind you that, for those planning to join our network, it is required to either post in this thread or PM me before I am able to accept you into the network. We have had a couple instances where some have attempted to become members of the network, but have not posted anything in this thread, or sent me a PM. As a note, I prefer posts in this thread since it raises overall awareness and lets people know it is an active network.

Currently, when someone new joins our network, it sends in a pending request to join. I have two buttons: Accept and Reject. I cannot directly ask who they are, so I must rely on outside sources such as this thread (and through asking members when I must, though I dislike doing so) to decide if I accept them or not. If their request sits on the network for over a week, I'll likely end up rejecting them.

I'm bringing this up now because, at the time of this posting, we have an unknown pending request in the network, and no one I've asked knows who it is.

For the record, these people (as of this post) are currently members of the FantasyDreamers Hamachi Network:

- LunarSpotlight
- Zeronic
- Ryoga
- Darth
- SonicChaos
- Ananke (currently not a member of FD)
- Mr. Crazy (currently not a member of FD)

Again, thanks to those who have joined our network. It expands the possibilities of this small community we're all already a part of.
